I don't normally like historic books but this one was a nice story. The Virginia Company of London was advertising to get women to move to the Jamestown colony and become wives to the bachelors there. Modesty got in trouble with the law and saw this as a way to escape. Once there, she started pairing up the women with men who would be a good match - for a small price. She was going to use her earnings to buy out her contract and head back to London. Unfortunately, one of the men recognized her and soon everything started going downhill for her and she was almost burned alive as a witch. She had to agree to marry one of the mean in order to save her life. A good read about the way some of the Indians accepted the newcomers to America, how people bartered to get their needs met and how marriages of necessities became marriages of love.Product details

The Maidenhead edition by Parris Afton Bonds Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The main characters, and all the others, were interesting, seemed real, and despite flaws and past mistakes, made for one another. Really good book.
I really enjoyed this book that had several love stories going on at once. There was Modesty, Clarissa and Rose, whom all signed marriage contracts. I fell in love with Modesty and Mad Dog's relationship. I felt their passion leaping off the pages and saw their love growing by their actions. They never spoke of it til the end of the book but I was so glad for them. I really liked this book.
This book is not without some interest, but the main character and situation overall feels like it was pushed together out of many needs to make it somehow logical. She has the smarts to escape england, and set up her own inn, and to figure out she needs to leave before discovered, but then goes to the only place she is most likely to be found by the bad guys. She manages to stay "pure" through all this then loses it all at once when a guy stops at the inn and gambles with her. I lost interest halfway through.
It took me a while to a warm up to the main characters, but once I did, the story took over. They are both "damaged" people, fleeing from a previous life. The side stories of the other women add to the close community feel once they settle into their new lives. The tenuous footing with the Indian tribes maintains that underlying foreboding. All lead up to a cataclysmic finale. I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others who enjoy historical romance.
I don't understand the 4- and 5-star reviews for this book. An editor and proofreader are sorely needed. The main female character definitely fell short of heroine status. The main male character had promise but fell flat in the end. Romance was nonexistent and the sex scenes were awful. I just don't get it.
Historical Books are my favorite but this one was better than many !!! It covers both England and Early America Jamestown showing the evils and the open opportunities available in a new country !!!!I enjoyed the way the characters were outline then developed with several real surprises !!!! It is a good stand alone book but I hope the Ms Bonds has another book planned to carry on the life stories started in this great book ..I hope you enjoy as much as I did ..Happy Reading !!!!
Beyond being a darned good romance, I found this novel to be an accurate view of colonial lives. As a teacher, I'm always looking for historical books that blend life-at-the-the times with dynamic characterization and multiple plot lines--without too much blatant sex. This book does that, and more. It examines different kinds of love and how circumstances, shared goals, and hard work can soften hearts and change lives. It is easy to step into the time period painted for us Friendly Indians with still-dangerous factions. We see dug-out canoes contrasted with the "big" sailing ships that graced our eastern boundary rivers. Frontier life contrasts with village Puritan life, contrasts with Jamestown coastal life, and we even get a peek at the beginnings of the tobacco slave trade. The underlying theme for each character is "freedom" -- and it looks different for each of them. That said, when paired with love and the harsh realities of Colonial American life, freedom is a bit fluid, and therefore reminds us that we, too, can sometimes find unexpected happiness through the mysterious twists of love.
